Alternative Metaphors of the Natural Sciences
This workshop will show the limitations of our modern view of reality and how it can be understood, not as a dogmatic structure, but as a set of "metaphors." Instead of hypnotically succumbing to metaphors that have become too confining for us, we will be put in a position to consciously exchange these metaphors for others.
A workshop by:
Dr. Henning Alberts (Germany)
Date:
Sunday, August 1, 2010, 10:15 to 11:15 a.m.
Content
In the Middle Ages people believed in "divine revelations," with the Bible as the main source of reference. Today we believe in the "objective truth" of the natural sciences, with statistics and figures serving as indisputable references. Many see this as progress, but it is perhaps only a process of exchanging one set of metaphors for another.
In this workshop we will show the limitations of our modern view of reality. We will look for contradictions in the areas of astronomy, archaeology, and evolution theory, and question the validity of our historical self-awareness and our conceptions of space and time. Furthermore, we will discuss facts that contradict our current view of the world and strange reports that we usually classify as mythological.
The goal of this workshop is to show how our modern view of reality can be understood, not as a dogmatic structure, but as a set of "metaphors." Instead of hypnotically succumbing to metaphors that have become too confining for us, we will be put in a position to consciously exchange these metaphors for others.
